Remember (serie)
Due to the increasing Allied threat in 1945, among other things, Kamp Amersfoort was transferred to the Dutch Red Cross. On April 19, 1945, this was officially confirmed by “SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Polizei ‘Schongarth’.
The existing 475 to 500 prisoners were no longer the responsibility of the German occupying forces. On April 20, the guards left the camp. From that moment on the present former prisoners enjoyed their relative freedom. Kamp Amersfoort was at that time a shaky enclave in occupied territory. On May 8, 1945, when British and Canadian soldiers marched into the camp, the liberation was also to the former prisoners a fact.
April 19, 2013
Every year, the transfer to the Dutch Red Cross is commemorated. The memorial - where former prisoners, relatives and interested parties to be present - will take place on the grounds of the memorial of Kamp Amersfoort.
